While I stare at my computer screen contemplating our first Unlock Higher Ed General Meeting for this year, I can’t help but sit back and smile. I smile because I look with optimism where we come from and where we are headed.
By Michael A. Saine Have you ever had that dream where you had to speak in front of everyone? That dream where the lights are shining and fee blinding? I found myself in one of those moments, but instead of an awful dream, I was standing before microphone in front of 30 or so people. I had suddenly found myself giving a part of a presentation for the Speaker’s bureau associated as a working group within the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) science, technology, engineering, and mathematics Opportunities (STEM-OPS).

This fall marked P2P’s first cohort graduation inside a correctional facility since the advent of COVID in 2020. Cohort 26 took place in Missouri Dept. of Corrections, in a new state P2P had not worked with on the inside before. The entire P2P team and community felt energized by finally having the opportunity to share our program and the hope and support it instills with those who were still incarcerated. By, Jessica Snow P2P is constantly evolving. Our program now stretches from coast to coast, offering virtual cohorts inside and outside correctional facilities, reaching hundreds of justice-impacted scholars pursuing the next steps in their education and careers.
But it wasn’t always this way. This summer, our organization celebrated its 25th cohort graduation. Looking back over 25 cohorts, it is easy to see how the program has advanced. Still, despite challenges (gaining access to incarcerated participants and COVID), P2P, like most returning citizens in general, has persevered. By, Jessica Snow While in New Orleans, one of the best parts of our trip was the book-signing at Melba's Po'boy Shop. Melba's is one of the most hoppin' 24 hour restaurant spots in NOLA--but it is so much more than that. This one of a kind place, run by its passionate and enthusiastic owner-Jane Wolfe, is its own intellectual hub that has cultivated an entire literacy community. Authors from all over the country visit Melba's!
By, Jessica Snow Last month, the P2P Leadership Team traveled to the bright and musical city of New Orleans, Louisiana to attend the 2022 Jobs for the Future (JFF) Horizon Conference. This year’s conference had a focus on connecting impoverished and racially marginalized communities, and those from underrepresented backgrounds, to better jobs, skills, training, and education, enabling their access to an enhanced job market.
